The Aliade Market in Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State recorded fresh price movements on Tuesday, 21st April 2026, reflecting continued pressure on food prices across key staples and agricultural commodities.
A market survey showed significant variations in the cost of essential food items, with grains, oilseeds, and tubers trading at elevated levels compared to previous months.
Groundnut sold for ₦100,000 per 50-kilogram sack, while soya beans commanded ₦110,000 per sack of the same weight. Guinea corn was priced at ₦60,000 per 50-kilogram bag, and rice paddy traded at ₦55,000 per sack. White beans were listed at ₦50,000 per Bagco bag, and maize sold for ₦52,000 per 50-kilogram sack, available in red and black line varieties.
In the vegetable oil and tuber segment, a bottle of red oil was priced at ₦1,500, while garri sold for between ₦25,000 and ₦30,000 per 50-kilogram bag, depending on the colour line. Cassava chips were quoted at ₦9,000 per bag, and yam chips sold for ₦30,000 per bag. One hundred tubers of yam ranged from ₦140,000 to ₦250,000, reflecting wide variability in size and quality.
A bag of cashew nuts was priced at ₦140,000, while a rubber of cashew nuts went for ₦5,000. Melon, known locally as egusi, sold for ₦160,000 per 50-kilogram sack, and bene seed recorded a price of ₦195,000 per sack. A bag of akpu, a processed cassava product, was listed at ₦2,000. Farm tools also saw price increases, with a big hoe selling for ₦6,500 per unit.
Traders and market observers attribute the sustained high prices to ongoing supply chain challenges and reduced harvest yields in some producing areas.
