Tension has escalated in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State after soldiers allegedly beat and disarmed local youth volunteers who were mobilizing for self-defense against persistent attacks by suspected armed herdsmen.
The incident occurred in Adija community as youth volunteers from various communities gathered in Ologo and Asaba villages to discuss security concerns and community protection strategies. While returning home, they were intercepted by soldiers.
During the encounter, a local vigilante commander, Olowo Otache, and his younger brother were allegedly beaten and sustained injuries. They were subsequently taken to General Hospital, Ugbokpo, for treatment. Sources also claimed that soldiers confiscated locally made firearms belonging to some of the volunteers.
The development sparked outrage among residents, leading to protests and a temporary blockade of the Otukpo-Oweto Federal Highway by angry youths demanding better protection for their communities.
Youth volunteer Adu Aboh explained that the mobilization was prompted by continued killings in the area, including the recent death of three farmers in Ikobi. Residents expressed frustration over what they described as abandonment, with many feeling that security agencies often respond late to distress calls.
Community leaders have renewed calls for increased security presence across Apa LGA and urged the Federal Government, security agencies, and the Benue State Government to take decisive steps to curb the violence and restore confidence among residents.
As of the time of this report, the Nigerian military is yet to issue an official statement on the allegations.
