The Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 persons allegedly linked to the obstruction of Peter Obi’s convoy during his visit to the state on Tuesday.
The Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Makurdi. According to him, the police were informed about Obi’s visit on Monday and security personnel were deployed ahead of his arrival. However, a group of people later blocked the convoy, creating tension that could have turned violent.
The police reportedly chose not to use force immediately to avoid loss of lives and destruction of property. Obi was eventually escorted safely to the airport and left the state.
The commissioner said the command later launched an intelligence-led operation, leading to the arrest of 46 suspects, while efforts are still ongoing to apprehend others allegedly involved. He stressed that the police remained neutral and professional, adding that nobody has the right to unlawfully prevent another person from moving freely.
The police have also warned that, with the 2027 elections approaching, actions capable of increasing political tension will not be tolerated. The investigation is still ongoing, and anyone found culpable will face prosecution according to the law.
