Idoma Television Defends Och’Idoma’s Gesture of Respect to Pastor Kumuyi Amid Social Media Debate

A photograph showing the paramount ruler of the Idoma people, His Royal Majesty Dr. John Elaigwu Odogbo (Agaba Idu), bending in greeting to Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi, General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, has sparked heated discussions across Idoma land.

The image, captured during a Christian gathering, has drawn criticism from some quarters who argue that the gesture is unbecoming of a traditional ruler and that a king should not bow before any individual. Idoma Television has pushed back strongly against this view, describing the outrage as unnecessary.

In a detailed statement, the media organisation argued that leadership is not diminished by humility. It cited biblical examples of great leaders such as King David, who danced before the Ark of the Covenant, and King Solomon, who welcomed prophets and elders with respect. The post also highlighted similar gestures of courtesy by traditional rulers across Africa and in other cultures, including members of the British Royal Family and Japanese emperors.

Idoma Television emphasised that the Och’Idoma remains the custodian of Idoma customs, traditions, and identity, and that a courteous greeting to a respected cleric does not undermine his authority. The organisation noted that the gesture was an expression of respect at a large Christian event, not an act of worship or surrender of royal dignity.

The statement further urged the Idoma nation to focus on more pressing issues such as security, welfare, economic opportunities for the youth, and cultural preservation, rather than magnifying isolated moments of courtesy. It described public discourse on the matter as having “sunk too low” and called for greater support for institutions and leaders working for unity, peace, and progress.
