For some time, Benue State has remained one of Nigeria’s most vulnerable theatres of violent attacks in the North-Central geopolitical zone. Many communities were repeatedly subjected to armed invasions, banditry, kidnappings, and the destruction of lives and livelihoods. While successive administrations have grappled with the challenge, the current security architecture unfolding under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Executive Governor of Benue State, is beginning to signal a more coordinated and strategic response to the menace.
President Tinubu’s approval of the establishment of the Nigerian Army’s 5 Division Headquarters in Makurdi represents a landmark intervention in the nation’s security framework. Beyond creating another military formation, the decision strategically positions Benue at the heart of coordinated military operations covering Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi States. It is a recognition of the state’s strategic importance and the urgent need to strengthen the security presence within Nigeria’s North-Central region.
Governor Alia has rightly described the development as a historic milestone. His administration has demonstrated remarkable commitment by pledging to provide land, logistics, construction support and furnishing for the headquarters and all other approved military formations. Such collaboration underscores the understanding that security is a shared responsibility requiring synergy between the Federal Government, state governments and the military. The Governor’s assurance during the visit of the Army Headquarters Implementation Committee reflects more than ceremonial support. It signals a practical partnership designed to accelerate the operational take-off of the new division. By committing state resources to facilitate the establishment of the formations, the Benue Government is reinforcing its determination to deny criminal elements the space to freely operate.
Equally significant is President Tinubu’s recent approval of an unprecedented salary increase for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel. With salary adjustments ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across various ranks, the administration has demonstrated that troop welfare remains central to its national security agenda. Officers from the rank of Colonel upward will receive a 30 per cent increase, those between Colonel and Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will benefit from an impressive 80 per cent increment. The welfare package, which raises the annual military wage bill from approximately ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, goes beyond improved remuneration. It is a powerful morale booster for over 250,000 officers and men who daily confront terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements across the country.
President Tinubu has consistently maintained that no nation can attain sustainable development without security. His administration’s commitment to modernising the armed forces through improved welfare, enhanced weaponry and advanced technological capabilities demonstrates a comprehensive approach to combating insecurity. Motivated personnel equipped with modern operational tools are better positioned to respond decisively to evolving security threats. With a renewed motivation, officers and men deployed to Benue will surely provide the much-needed composure and stimulated gallantry to root out any security challenge.
For Benue State, these interventions carry profound significance. The location of the 5 Division Headquarters in Makurdi is expected to improve intelligence gathering, accelerate troop deployment, strengthen rapid response capabilities, and enhance coordination among security agencies. Communities that have lived under constant fear now have renewed hope that sustained military presence will restore confidence and facilitate economic recovery. Consistently, Governor Alia has repeatedly affirmed that the security of lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of his administration. He has made it a routine to be facilitating, aiding and dishing out several support mechanisms to the personnel in Benue State. Every security formation is giving the desired support needed to execute its mandate.
His collaboration with the Federal Government illustrates a leadership philosophy anchored on partnership rather than partisanship. The fight against insecurity is neither a federal responsibility alone nor a state obligation in isolation; it demands collective commitment at every level of government. This is the lesson the amiable Governor is driving home. The establishment of the new military formations therefore represents more than institutional expansion. It is a strategic investment in peace, stability and national cohesion. It also demonstrates the Federal Government’s confidence in Benue’s strategic role within Nigeria’s security architecture.
As Governor Alia intensifies efforts to reclaim every part of Benue from criminal elements, President Tinubu’s decisive interventions are providing the momentum required to strengthen that mission. With enhanced military capacity, improved troop welfare, stronger federal-state collaboration, and renewed public confidence, the foundations are being laid for a safer Benue where citizens can once again pursue their daily lives without fear. If sustained with the same level of commitment, these initiatives may well mark a turning point in Benue’s long and difficult journey towards lasting peace and security.
