Residents Celebrate Ongoing Upgrades in drainage systems in Makurdi While Flooding Remains a Concern

In a post reflecting on the rapid changes taking place in Makurdi, residents of Wurukum have highlighted the significant improvements in infrastructure along the main market road. Previously, this area near the main market would flood heavily whenever it rained for more than seven hours, leaving the streets and compounds submerged in water. Today, the situation has improved dramatically thanks to ongoing construction works.

Aalaaga Isaac Churchill, who was on the ground with Uorson Kuranen Joel and other local stakeholders, took to social media to share his observations. He noted that while some other parts of the town are still experiencing flooding, the progress in this particular stretch of the road is worth celebrating. The newly constructed drains, covered with red fencing and green base plates, are now directing rainwater away from the homes and businesses, replacing the old open gutters and makeshift barriers that once filled up during heavy downpours.

Churchill expressed optimism that if this pace of development continues, Makurdi could be transformed by the end of Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia’s tenure. He described the area as potentially being built on high rock, a statement that has sparked widespread praise for the administration’s infrastructure drive.

The post comes as Benue State continues to focus on addressing long-standing challenges in urban development and flood management. While flooding remains a pressing issue in other parts of the state capital, the visible changes in Wurukum demonstrate the tangible results of the government’s commitment to improving roads and drainage systems across Makurdi.

Residents are hopeful that the momentum will spread to other high-risk areas, bringing relief to communities that have suffered repeated losses from heavy rains. The images shared show clean, newly laid drainage channels that stand in sharp contrast to the flooded streets of years gone by, symbolising a brighter future for the city.
