Pensioners in Benue State took to the streets of Makurdi on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in a peaceful protest to press the state government for the payment of their long-overdue gratuities, arrears, and other entitlements.
Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the protesters appealed directly to Governor Hyacinth Alia, lamenting the hardship they face due to delayed payments. Some of the messages read: “Your Excellency Gov Alia, you have buried pensioners for paying gratuities during your time, June 2023 to date,” and “Your Excellency Gov Alia, Benue pensioners are dying, pay our arrears and entitlements.”
The demonstration highlighted the difficulties faced by retirees under the current administration, with many expressing frustration over what they described as prolonged neglect despite promises made since the governor assumed office in 2023.
The protest comes amid ongoing concerns about the welfare of pensioners in the state, many of whom rely on these payments for their daily survival and medical needs.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official reaction from the Benue State Government regarding the pensioners’ demands. The action reflects the growing impatience among retirees who continue to call for urgent intervention to address their plight.
