Operatives of the Benue State Police Command have successfully thwarted an armed robbery operation, killing three suspected robbers in a fierce gun battle along the Vaase-Chito Road in Ukum Local Government Area.
The incident occurred at about 2:48 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, after the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gbeji Division received intelligence that armed men were attacking motorists and robbing them on the route.
In response, the DPO quickly mobilised a patrol team in collaboration with members of the Community Volunteer Guards and moved to the scene. Upon sighting the security operatives, the suspects reportedly opened fire, triggering a gun duel. The security team returned fire and neutralised three of the suspects. Some of the slain suspects were reportedly dressed in military camouflage attire.
Other members of the gang fled the scene on motorcycles, sustaining suspected gunshot injuries. During a search of the area, police recovered one AK-47 rifle, 21 rounds of live ammunition, and a motorcycle. The recovered items have been secured as exhibits for further investigation.
The remains of the deceased suspects were evacuated to the Gbeji Hospital Mortuary for autopsy. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing gang members.
Police authorities described the operation as part of sustained efforts to tackle armed robbery, banditry, and other violent crimes across Benue State.
This latest success is expected to bring some relief to motorists and residents along the Vaase-Chito axis, which has reportedly been targeted by criminal elements.
