Benue State Makes History as First Subnational Entity to Join United Nations Volunteers Programme

In a landmark achievement, Benue State has emerged as the first subnational entity in the world to successfully mobilize its people into the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme. This historic milestone was celebrated yesterday at Government House, Makurdi, where Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, alongside Ms. Veronica Obiewewebi, received the Global Executive Coordinator of the UNV Programme, Mr. Toily Kurbanov, and Mr. Marc Lalane.

Fr. Alia expressed immense pride in this accomplishment, highlighting it as a clear demonstration of the strength, capacity, and global relevance of Benue’s youth. “This is a testament to the potential and dedication of our young people,” he stated during the engagement.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for Fr. Alia to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to strengthening this partnership and expanding opportunities for the state’s residents. He emphasized the pivotal role of the Benue State Bureau for International Cooperation and Development (BICD) and other key agencies in driving this initiative forward. “We will continue to empower our people to engage globally, contribute meaningfully, and bring pride to our state and nation,” he added.
