The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has assured residents of Gwer-West Local Government Area that the rehabilitation of the Makurdi-Naka road will receive priority attention from his administration.

Governor Alia described the road as critical to economic and social mobility in the area. He gave the assurance on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, while attending the burial ceremony of Mama Sarah Aliegba, mother of Prof. Eugene Aliegba, the Commissioner representing Benue State at the Federal Character Commission. The ceremony took place in Naka, headquarters of Gwer-West LGA.

Addressing mourners and community stakeholders, the governor acknowledged the consistent support of the Tyoshin people for his administration and urged them to sustain their cooperation for continued development in the area.

He also highlighted ongoing interventions in Gwer-West, particularly the successful reticulation of a 500,000-litre-per-day water treatment plant commissioned on February 19, 2026, in partnership with the European Union and humanitarian organisations. The facility is designed to serve approximately 35,000 residents daily, including internally displaced persons and host communities, significantly reducing the burden of water scarcity that residents, especially women and children, had endured for decades.

In his remarks, Governor Alia noted the challenges posed by flooding during the rainy season, which often contaminates water sources and spreads waterborne diseases. He expressed satisfaction that the new water project has greatly alleviated these hardships.

On the political front, the governor reiterated that there would be no automatic tickets for aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing a level playing field for all candidates in line with the directives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Local leaders, including the Executive Chairman of Gwer-West LGA, Hon. Victor Ormin, and Ter-Tyoshin, HRH Chief Daniel Abomtse, commended the governor for his support to the area and appealed for urgent intervention on the Makurdi-Naka road, which has remained in a deplorable condition for over two decades. They also appreciated the appointment of 15 indigenes of Tyoshin into key state government positions, describing it as unprecedented.
