A violent attack on the Tiv community of Tse Bawa in Chanchanginji Ward, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, has left three people dead and deepened fears over recurring insecurity in the region.
According to reports circulating on social media late Thursday afternoon, gunmen identified by locals as Fulani herdsmen invaded the village in the early hours of January 30, 2026. The assailants reportedly opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the deaths of three individuals.
The victims have been named as:
– Faasema Alibo
– Mr. Mfavega
– An unnamed elderly man from Chanwa
Eyewitness accounts shared online described a scene of horror, with bodies reportedly transported in wheelbarrows and laid out for community viewing. The attack has sparked widespread grief and outrage, particularly among Tiv communities who have long raised concerns about targeted violence in farming areas along the Benue-Taraba border.
Social media users expressed deep sorrow and frustration, with one widely shared post lamenting, “Why always the Tiv?” The incident has reignited debates over the persistent farmer-herder clashes, land disputes, and inadequate security presence in rural parts of Taraba and neighboring states.
As of the time of this report, no official confirmation or detailed statement has been issued by the Taraba State Police Command or local government authorities regarding the attack. Security sources have not yet verified the identity of the perpetrators or provided information on whether any arrests have been made or if an investigation is underway.
The killing of the three residents comes amid ongoing tensions in parts of the Middle Belt, where similar incidents have frequently been attributed to clashes between herders and local farmers. Community leaders and residents have repeatedly called for stronger security measures, including increased patrols and dialogue to prevent further loss of life.
This latest tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for sustained efforts to address root causes of insecurity in the region, protect vulnerable rural populations, and restore peace to affected communities.
Further updates will be provided as official details emerge and the situation develops.
