The ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in Benue State have been marred by allegations of irregularities, leading to sharp criticism and protests across several parts of the state.
Multiple voices on social media have raised concerns over the handling of electoral materials. In Konshisha, for instance, accusations surfaced that materials meant for the primaries were allegedly handed to an aspirant and taken to a personal office instead of the INEC office. Similar grievances have been expressed regarding the conduct of direct primaries, with many describing the process as flawed and unfair.
In North Bank wards of Makurdi, results showing very low votes for certain high-profile aspirants have triggered mockery and debates about grassroots support. Youths in the Idoma-speaking zone of Benue South took to the streets in protest, carrying a coffin and displaying placards to express anger over alleged killings and the outcome of the primaries, declaring that “Apa is bleeding.”
Several commentators have drawn comparisons to past mistakes by the opposition PDP, warning that the APC risks repeating similar errors. Others have expressed disappointment with Governor Hyacinth Alia’s influence on the process and questioned the integrity of the entire exercise.
As reactions continue to pour in, many party members and observers are now looking ahead to the general elections, with some stating that the real test will come at the INEC-supervised polls. The controversies have further heightened political tensions in Benue State as the 2027 election cycle gathers momentum.
