Benue Man Decries Witchcraft Accusations Linked to Poverty After Photos of Elderly Suspect Surface

Photos of an elderly man accused of witchcraft in Mbagen clan, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, have sparked reactions online after a woman identified as Naomi shared images of the man alongside a message blaming him for the death of her brother and others in the community. In the post, she described the man as evil and declared that God had finally put an end to his alleged activities.

Responding to the images, a Benue indigene, Kamo Emmanuel, argued that such accusations rarely target parents of wealthy individuals living in cities. “In Tiv society, parents who have rich kids in the city are not tagged witches and wizards. Poverty is a b@stard,” he wrote, highlighting what he described as the harsh reality of poverty in rural communities.
