Ghastly Motor Accident Claims Multiple Lives Along Makurdi–Gboko Road in Benue

A devastating road traffic crash has reportedly claimed several lives near Tarhembembe Market in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State along the Makurdi–Gboko federal highway.

Eyewitness accounts and widely shared social media posts describe a horrific scene in which a vehicle veered off the road or collided, resulting in extensive wreckage and multiple fatalities. Graphic images circulating online show a badly mangled car surrounded by sympathizers, first responders, and distraught onlookers, with bodies visible on the ground and debris scattered across the roadside.

The accident occurred on Sunday, February 15, 2026, sparking immediate panic among residents and travellers. A post by local user Jigam Jnr described the incident as “ghastly,” warning members of the public to urgently contact loved ones traveling on the route and confirm their safety.

“Many lives were lost,” the post stated, urging people to reach out to relatives on the road that day.

The Makurdi–Gboko highway has long been notorious for frequent crashes attributed to speeding, poor road conditions in certain sections, overloading of vehicles, and reckless driving—particularly during weekends and market days when traffic volume spikes.

As of the time of this report, no official casualty figure, cause of the crash, or confirmation from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Benue State Traffic Management Authority, or police authorities has been released. Emergency responders and community volunteers were seen at the scene assisting the injured and recovering bodies.
