Catholic Clergy in Taraba Stage Peaceful Protest Over Incessant Attacks on Tiv Communities

Priests, Rev. Sisters, and faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi (Taraba axis) held a peaceful protest in Wukari on Sunday to draw urgent attention to what they described as relentless killings targeting Tiv settlements and Christian communities in parts of Taraba State.

Carrying placards with messages such as “No More Incessant Attacks,” “Save the Lives of Our People,” “Press Briefing on Incessant Attacks,” and “United We Stand, Together We Grow,” the demonstrators marched and gathered publicly to demand immediate government action to halt the violence.

Social media activist D’nkaked Elder Sughnnen Yaaya, who shared footage and images from the event, described the situation as “terrible,” lamenting that the killings—particularly in Tiv locations—continue without sufficient public outcry or decisive intervention.

“The other day, Catholic Priests and Rev Sisters staged a peaceful protest, calling on Government to help stop the unnecessary killing of Christians by Fulani herdsmen,” Yaaya posted. He questioned the motive behind the attacks, asking whether the goal is to “clear off Tiv ethnicity or what?” and concluded with the plea: “God help us.”

Participants at the protest highlighted the devastating impact of the violence, including loss of lives, displacement of families, destruction of farmlands, and growing fear among rural dwellers. They accused authorities of inaction and called for stronger security deployment, prosecution of perpetrators, and genuine dialogue to restore peace.

The demonstration reflects deepening concern among church leaders and Tiv communities over recurring farmer-herder clashes and communal violence in flashpoint areas of Taraba. Church authorities have previously raised alarms about targeted attacks on Christian populations and farming settlements.

No immediate official response has been issued by the Taraba State Government or security agencies to the Sunday protest. However, the visible participation of clergy and religious sisters has amplified calls for urgent measures to protect vulnerable communities and end the cycle of bloodshed in the region.
