A disturbing case involving the alleged trafficking and brutal assault of a young girl from Benue State has surfaced on social media, prompting urgent calls for intervention from community leaders and state authorities.
According to a post shared by Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya, the minor, who hails from Benue State, was reportedly sold by her aunt to an individual in Benin City, Edo State. The post, which references information received from an inbox source, details how the girl was yesterday accused of stealing ₦200,000. In response, members of the community allegedly subjected her to a severe beating before handing her over to the police. Eyewitness accounts shared in the post describe the scene as heartbreaking, with the young girl crying as she faced the ordeal, leaving observers feeling powerless due to lack of authority to intervene.
The incident has sparked outrage, with the poster emphasizing that the girl is “our own” and urging collective action to address the injustice. “We all need to stand and correct this,” the message reads. Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya stated that details are being gathered for immediate action and copied key stakeholders, including Mr. Agber Akaajime Gregory, President of Tiv Youths in Edo, the Benue State Police Command in Makurdi, and the Benue State Government.
The post includes images appearing to show the aftermath or scene related to the incident, further amplifying its emotional impact. As the story continues to circulate, it highlights ongoing concerns around child protection, human trafficking, and mob justice in parts of Nigeria. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but the public outcry is expected to prompt swift investigations into the allegations of trafficking and the violent response to the theft claim.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young girls in the region and the need for stronger community and governmental safeguards against exploitation and unlawful violence.
