A young girl from Ipav in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State has tragically died after being allegedly trafficked and brutally assaulted in Benin City, Edo State.
In a sobering update shared on social media by Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya, the girl reportedly passed away last night while in detention at Ogobi Police Station. She had been severely beaten following accusations of stealing ₦200,000 after being sold by a trafficker identified as an Ushongo brother to a woman in Benin.
According to the post, the trafficker confessed to having trafficked eight girls and handing them over to different women in Benin. Both the trafficker and the woman referred to as the “madam” have been arrested, and legal proceedings are now underway.
The activist expressed appreciation for the swift response and efforts of Mr. Agber Akaajime Gregory, President of Tiv Youths in Benin, and his team. The case has drawn significant attention, with calls directed at the Benue State Police Command in Makurdi and the Benue State Government to ensure justice is served.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the dangers of human trafficking and the vulnerability of young girls in the region, as community leaders continue to push for accountability and stronger protection measures.
