Residents and traders in the Swange area of Makurdi, Benue State, are contending with severe flooding that has submerged parts of WuruKum Market, turning the busy trading hub into a waterlogged zone.
Social media posts circulating on Tuesday captured the extent of the flooding, with murky water covering roads and market stalls, disrupting normal commercial activities and raising concerns about the situation inside the market.
A concerned resident, Jacob Akpene, called on the state government to urgently intervene, describing the situation as “seriously getting out of hand.” He noted that previous attempts by the last administration to relocate the market faced resistance from traders, who even took the government to court.
The flooding has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the market to heavy rainfall and poor drainage, prompting renewed calls for lasting solutions to protect traders and the local economy.
