In a commendable initiative, students from the Department of Chemistry at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOAUM) have taken a bold step towards promoting environmental sustainability. A group of 400-level students in Environmental Management and Toxicology recently organized a sensitization awareness campaign at Wurukum Roundabout Market in Makurdi, Benue State.
The campaign, tagged “Report on Sensitization Awareness Campaign on Responsible Use of the Environment,” was designed to address the growing concerns of pollution, improper waste disposal, and poor environmental practices, particularly in busy market areas where human and commercial activities are intense.
The main goal was to educate market traders and the general public on responsible waste management. During the exercise, the students highlighted several key objectives:
– Educating market users on proper waste disposal methods
– Promoting environmental cleanliness and hygiene
– Creating awareness about the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal
– Encouraging practices such as reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.
Key messages delivered during the campaign included disposing of waste only in designated bins, avoiding dumping refuse in drains and open spaces, practicing recycling and reuse where possible, and maintaining personal and environmental hygiene. The students emphasized that a clean environment promotes good health and supports business growth.
While the campaign recorded some success, the students also noted a few challenges. These included initial resistance from some traders, inadequate waste disposal facilities in the market, and limited time to reach all participants.
Based on their observations, the students made practical recommendations, such as the provision of more waste bins by local authorities, organizing regular environmental awareness programs in markets, enforcement of sanitation laws, and stronger collaboration between stakeholders.
This student-led effort is a shining example of how young people are stepping up to tackle environmental issues at the grassroots level. With markets being major hubs of activity, initiatives like this can go a long way in fostering a culture of cleanliness and sustainability in our communities.
Kudos to Aondoahemen Daniel Uji and his team for this impactful project! Actions like these remind us that environmental protection starts with small, consistent steps from all of us.
What do you think? Have you witnessed similar awareness campaigns in your area? How can we all contribute to keeping our markets and environments cleaner?
