A major political realignment is underway in Benue State as Dr. Mathias Byuan, a former APC governorship aspirant, has officially joined the Labour Party (LP) to contest the 2027 governorship election.
Dr. Byuan collected the Labour Party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Friday, May 15, accompanied by supporters from across the state’s three senatorial districts.
The former Executive Director of Housing, Finance and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority, Abuja, said his move to the Labour Party is part of a “mission to rescue Benue” from insecurity and poor governance.
Despite flying the Labour Party flag, Dr. Byuan openly declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term ambition in 2027. He stated, “Though I am contesting under the Labour Party, my presidential candidate remains President Tinubu,” insisting that Tinubu deserves another term to complete his Renewed Hope Agenda.
He took a swipe at the current administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, accusing it of failing to adequately address insecurity and workers’ welfare challenges in the state.
Dr. Byuan promised that if elected governor, his administration would prioritize security, prompt payment of salaries, healthcare, education, roads, housing, and rural development.
Supporters who accompanied him described his ambition as a fresh opportunity for Benue to “get it right” in 2027.
The development adds a new dimension to the unfolding 2027 political contest in Benue State, as more aspirants position themselves against the ruling APC administration.
