A strong wave of public anger is building in Benue State as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) continue to face severe hunger, malnutrition, and neglect despite substantial government allocations meant for their welfare.

In a widely shared post, social commentator Asom D Jerry raised the alarm, claiming that the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) receives ₦350 million monthly for IDP support. Over 36 months, this amounts to a total of ₦12.6 billion. Yet, many displaced families in various camps across the state are reportedly dying from starvation and lack of basic care.

The post directly accused Sir James Aondoakaa Iorpuu, the Executive Secretary of BSEMA, of diverting food supplies and relief materials intended for IDPs for personal gain. According to the claims, while vulnerable women and children sleep hungry in the camps, the official entrusted with their welfare has allegedly been using public funds to acquire properties across the country.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, along with BSEMA, was established to protect and support vulnerable citizens affected by conflict and natural disasters in the state. However, the post suggested that under the current situation, the opposite appears to be happening.

The writer called on the Benue people to demand answers, questioning the whereabouts of the ₦12.6 billion and why innocent displaced persons are suffering while officials live in comfort. The message was copied to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.

Benue State has been grappling with a protracted humanitarian crisis caused by years of farmer-herder clashes and banditry, which have displaced hundreds of thousands of people. IDP camps in the state have frequently been reported to suffer from inadequate food, shelter, healthcare, and sanitation.

As calls for accountability intensify, many residents are urging relevant anti-corruption agencies and the state government to investigate the allegations thoroughly and ensure that relief materials reach the intended beneficiaries without further delay.

The situation has once again highlighted the urgent need for transparency, proper oversight, and effective management of humanitarian aid in Benue State to prevent vulnerable citizens from continued suffering. Further developments on this matter are expected as pressure mounts for answers.
