The Turan community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State held a mass burial on March 19, 2026, for the remaining victims of a recent deadly attack, yet the solemn occasion was marred by confusion, obstruction, and reports of the mortician’s abduction.
Turan, located in the southeastern part of Benue State, has been left in deep mourning following what residents described as a brutal terrorist attack by suspected Fulani gunmen. The mass burial, intended as a final farewell and collective healing for grieving families, turned into a day of unbearable anguish when logistical and security challenges disrupted proceedings.
Widows clutched empty arms, orphans stared silently at graves, and parents bowed over the loss of children they will never hold again. Families reported that even in death, their loved ones were denied peaceful rest due to interference and alleged abduction of the mortician handling the bodies.
The community described the attack as part of an ongoing pattern of violence that has reduced human beings to animals in parts of Benue State. The burial became both a sacred rite and a public plea to the world to witness their suffering, hear their grief, and demand justice.
Residents emphasized that while Turan mourns, the community’s spirit remains unbroken. They called for urgent attention to the cycle of killings, insisting that justice and protection must prevail to prevent further loss of life.
No official casualty figure or detailed security update has been released by authorities regarding the specific incident that led to the mass burial. The development has once again highlighted the persistent insecurity in rural Benue communities and the emotional toll on survivors and grieving families.
