On Sunday, April 10, 2026, friends, family, colleagues, and well-wishers gathered at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Idyer, Benue State, for a joyous thanksgiving service and reception to celebrate the remarkable survival of Dr. Ijiko Bartholomew Eche, a medical doctor associated with the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi.

Dr. Eche’s ordeal began on February 13, 2026, when he developed a high fever. He was admitted to BSUTH two days later, and as his condition deteriorated, Lassa fever was suspected and later confirmed. He was promptly moved to the isolation ward for specialized care. Despite intensive medical intervention, his health continued to worsen, leading to complications that required his transfer to Jos University Teaching Hospital for dialysis.

According to accounts shared during the thanksgiving, Dr. Eche’s situation became critical during treatment. He reportedly experienced clinical death, with his spirit said to have left his body. In a deeply emotional moment, his younger brother, Inalegwu, was calling him back when a powerful voice commanded him to return. About five minutes later, Dr. Eche regained consciousness, blinked, and held his brother’s hand leaving medical staff and family members stunned.

With continued prayers from his loved ones, including his wife and elder brother Dr. Michael Ejiko, alongside aggressive medical support such as oxygen therapy, blood transfusions, and management of convulsions, Dr. Eche gradually recovered. In a powerful display of strength, he was discharged and walked back to the ward on his own.

Other doctors and a nurse who cared for him also shared goodwill messages, highlighting the intensity of the battle he fought.

The event served as both a celebration of life and a powerful testimony of faith, resilience, and the impact of timely medical intervention in the face of a life-threatening illness.
