A concerned resident of Makurdi has called on the Benue State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts in monitoring and enforcing the registration of commercial motorcycle (okada) riders in the state capital.

In a detailed Facebook post on Monday, Tofi Simon Ternenge (also known as Tofi Aluevese) urged relevant authorities to strengthen the ongoing okada riders registration exercise, describing it as crucial for improving security, accountability, and public safety in the Makurdi metropolis.

Ternenge narrated his experience earlier that day when he boarded an okada after dropping his car at a mechanic workshop. He paid ₦500 for a ride to the State Secretariat. However, the rider repeatedly asked for directions at several junctions, raising serious concerns about the rider’s familiarity with the city.

Upon reaching the State Secretariat gate, officials of the okada union approached the rider for booking. It was discovered that he was not a registered member, leading to his bike keys being confiscated for further action.

While commending the existing structures that caught the unregistered rider, Ternenge noted that the incident exposed significant gaps in the system, as unregistered operators still move freely within the metropolis.

The writer emphasized that a well-organized and properly enforced registration system would help curb criminal activities, improve rider accountability, and protect innocent citizens who rely on okada services daily.

He stressed the need for sustained enforcement, continuity, and improvement of the registration process, adding that the safety and orderliness of Makurdi depend on it.

Ternenge referenced the consistent advocacy of Rev. Fr. Solomon Ukeyima (Tor KSS) on the same issue and said he was lending his voice based on personal experience.

He respectfully called on all relevant authorities to give the matter the urgent attention it deserves.

The post was copied to key stakeholders, including:

– Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia
– Commissioner for Transport, Benue State
– Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs
– Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command
– Chairman, Makurdi Local Government Area
– Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)
– Nigeria Police Force (NPF)

This development comes barely two days after the Benue Motorcycle Association (BEMOA) publicly declared support for Governor Alia’s re-election bid in 2027.

The issue of okada regulation has remained a recurring concern in Benue State due to its links to road safety, criminal activities, and general order in urban areas. Many residents believe stricter enforcement of registration will bring much-needed sanity to the sector.
