The Executive Chairman of Guma Local Government Area in Benue State, Hon. Maurice Orwough, has strongly condemned a fresh communal clash between the people of Unyande and Kwenev communities, which led to the destruction of properties at Agbaka.
In an official statement issued through his Personal Assistant on Communication and Strategy, Ernest Tortiv, the chairman expressed deep concern over the loss of property and the tension the incident has created within the affected communities. He described the clash as unfortunate and avoidable, urging immediate action to restore peace.
Hon. Orwough called on security operatives to move swiftly in identifying and arresting those responsible for the attack, stressing that anyone found culpable must face the full weight of the law. He also directed security agencies to immediately restore order and ensure the protection of lives and property in the area.
The chairman appealed to residents in the affected communities to remain calm and law-abiding. He further urged community leaders, youths, and stakeholders from both Unyande and Kwenev to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that unity remains the only path to development in the area.
This latest incident is part of a long-standing communal dispute between the two neighboring communities in the Uvir Council Ward of Guma LGA. The conflict, which has recurred over the years and is often linked to issues such as land and resource ownership, has previously resulted in significant loss of lives and property. The Benue State Government had in the past intervened by placing restrictions on disputed areas like River Antse to prevent further escalation.
Hon. Orwough’s swift response reflects ongoing efforts by local authorities to address recurring security challenges in Guma LGA, a region that continues to grapple with both communal tensions and broader farmer-herder conflicts. Residents have been advised to cooperate with security agencies as investigations into the matter proceed.
The statement underscores the importance of dialogue in resolving differences and preventing violence from undermining the progress and development of communities in Benue State.
