Governor Hyacinth Alia has declared open the National Learning Assessment 2026 meeting held at the headquarters of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Makurdi, Benue State. The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr Margaret Adamu, hosted a technical team drawn from six states participating in the exercise.
The assessment, led by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), aims to generate reliable data to support student development, improve learning outcomes, and enhance education planning across the country. Dr Adamu emphasized the importance of the exercise and highlighted ongoing reforms in Benue State’s education sector, including the provision of free and compulsory basic education from Primary 1 to Junior Secondary School 3, as well as the renovation of public schools.
The Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Dr Grace Adagba, welcomed the delegation and assured them of the board’s full support. The participating states are Benue (host), Oyo, Gombe, Delta, Enugu, and Jigawa. The UBEC-led team is expected to carry out fieldwork, including visits to communities such as Adoka, as part of the assessment.
Stakeholders at the event commended the collaborative effort, describing it as a key step towards strengthening accountability and raising learning standards in basic education. The government also assured participants of a safe and conducive environment for the exercise.
