Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers in the state to steer clear of partisan political activities, insisting that the royal institution must remain neutral to preserve peace, unity, and public trust.
In a public notice released on Sunday, Ortom appealed to monarchs to avoid openly adopting political parties, aligning with political interests, or engaging in actions that could portray them as biased toward any political group. He stressed that traditional rulers are expected to serve as fathers to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
“Traditional rulers are fathers of all and not fathers of a political party,” Ortom stated, adding that any involvement in partisan politics is not only inappropriate but also contrary to the law and the spirit of the Nigerian Constitution.
The former governor cautioned that if the trend continues, concerned citizens and stakeholders may be compelled to take legal action, including dragging any traditional ruler found engaging in partisan politics before the court. He described such conduct as a threat to the dignity and unifying role of the traditional institution, warning that allowing royal fathers to become tools for political division would undermine peace and cohesion in the state.
Ortom emphasised that Benue requires peace, fairness, and unity rather than what he termed “royal political battles.” His remarks have ignited widespread debate across the state, with political observers and community leaders divided on the appropriate role of traditional rulers in modern democratic processes.
While some support Ortom’s position, arguing that monarchs should remain above partisan fray to maintain their moral authority, others contend that traditional rulers, as citizens, have the right to express political preferences provided they do not abuse their office.
As the conversation intensifies, many residents are calling for clearer guidelines and stronger enforcement mechanisms to protect the neutrality, dignity, and non-partisan character of the traditional institution in Benue State.
