A sudden demolition exercise carried out in front of Benue Links Park in Makurdi has left several business owners devastated, with valuable items reportedly crushed and no prior notice given to those affected.

The operation, which took place on Friday, targeted newly acquired office spaces, business containers, and makeshift structures operating around the popular park. Eyewitnesses and victims described the exercise as abrupt and traumatic, noting that demolition crews moved in without any warning, destroying properties while valuables—including mobile phones, business equipment, and stock—remained inside.

One affected trader recounted the ordeal, stating that his newly acquired office frontage was pulled down without warning. “It was not funny at all. There was no notice, no chance to move our things,” he lamented, expressing shock and helplessness over the loss.

Among the hardest hit was a container belonging to trader Bartholomew (referred to as lorember Batholomem in some accounts), which had been set up as a standard mini office. The structure was completely destroyed, along with two cartons of Point-of-Sale (POS) machines and other business tools stored inside. Several mobile phones and additional valuables were also said to have been crushed during the process.

The affected traders have strongly condemned the manner of the demolition, arguing that proper notice would have enabled them to salvage their properties and minimize losses. They are now calling on relevant authorities to provide an explanation for the action and to consider compensation for the damages suffered.

As of the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by those responsible for the demolition exercise. The lack of communication has fueled frustration among the victims and raised questions about the rationale behind the operation.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by informal and small-scale business operators in urban areas of Makurdi, where enforcement actions sometimes occur without adequate warning or dialogue. Such exercises, while often aimed at urban renewal, beautification, or clearing encroachments, frequently result in significant economic hardship for those impacted when not preceded by proper procedures.

This developing situation at Benue Links Park continues to generate local attention, with affected parties awaiting further details or intervention from government officials. Updates will be provided as more information emerges.
