The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, has successfully recorded its first deliveries following the reopening of its labour ward on Monday, January 19, 2026, fulfilling the promise made by hospital management during the official reopening ceremony on Friday, January 16.
The milestone deliveries come after services in the labour ward were suspended due to an industrial dispute involving doctors and nurses. To restore full operations and address critical gaps in maternal healthcare, the hospital management recently approved the emergency engagement of retired midwives alongside qualified young midwife nurses.
Among the first mothers to give birth was Mrs. Iornenge Faith, who delivered at approximately 12:10 AM. She expressed immense joy and gratitude, commending the medical team for their professionalism, dedication, and timely intervention throughout the process.
In another successful case, Mrs. Ushahhemba Faith Mtsor delivered via Caesarean Section at around 10:49 AM. Her mother, Mrs. Nguveren Mtsor, praised the healthcare workers for the high-quality care provided to her daughter and offered prayers for the hospital management and the Benue State Government. She wished them continued success in their efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve maternal and child health outcomes across the state.
The swift resumption of services and the positive experiences of the new mothers underscore the hospital’s commitment to restoring essential maternal and child healthcare services following the recent industrial action. BSUTH management has emphasized that the emergency staffing measures were taken to ensure uninterrupted and quality care for expectant mothers and newborns.
This development marks an encouraging start for the hospital in 2026, signaling renewed hope for improved maternal healthcare access in Benue State.
