In a decisive move to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed, the Benue State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Gwaza James Ahula, has dissolved the entire executive of the Katsina-Ala Branch with immediate effect following the tragic incident of 28th November 2025 that claimed lives and left several others injured at an Army checkpoint along the Amaafu–Zaki Biam Road.
The dissolution and indefinite suspension of the immediate past leadership was announced on Saturday as part of urgent measures to calm frayed nerves and rebuild trust within the union in the Sankara axis.
The Executive Chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government Council, Shaku Justine, PhD, expressed profound grief over the incident, extended heartfelt condolences to bereaved families, prayed for the repose of the departed souls and wished the injured quick recovery.
To ensure seamless operations and lasting peace, the state chairman has approved the immediate constitution of a Care-taker Committee to pilot the affairs of the Katsina-Ala Branch. The new committee, which took effect instantly, has the following members:
– Comrade Barnabas Hileimo — Care-taker Chairman
– Fanen Adi — Secretary
– Aondohemba Jabi — Treasurer
– Over Kerga — Financial Secretary
– Ibrahim Umaru — Organizing Secretary
– Iornumbe Iorvihi — Trustee
– John Morna — Auditor
The reconciliation process is being coordinated by Comrade Ilahator Wombo, Chairman of the Sankara Transport Reconciliation Committee, who confirmed that the care-taker team is already operational and enjoying full backing of the state leadership.
Union leaders praised the swift intervention, assuring members and the general public that orderly union activities will now return to Katsina-Ala and the entire Sankara transport corridor. They called on all aggrieved parties to embrace peace and allow the new committee to unite the branch.
The development is seen as a strong signal that the state NURTW leadership will no longer tolerate actions capable of disrupting peace or tarnishing the image of the union and the state.
Normalcy is gradually returning to motor parks in the area, and transporters have been urged to go about their legitimate businesses without fear.
