The Benue State Government has firmly dismissed as malicious and entirely false a circulating social media publication alleging that the administration of Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia plans to demolish the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Secretariat in Makurdi.
In an official statement dated Monday, 14th September 2026, the government described the claim as baseless and completely detached from the truth. It stressed that no such plan has ever been conceived, discussed or contemplated by the administration.
Governor Alia, described as a proud product of the Church, has consistently demonstrated respect, support and partnership with religious institutions across Benue State, including CAN. The Alia-led government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to maintaining a cordial, mutually respectful and productive relationship with CAN and all other religious bodies operating in the state.
Any suggestion to the contrary, the statement said, is a deliberate fabrication designed to incite disaffection between the government and the Church and to destabilise the peace currently enjoyed in Benue.
Members of the public, the media and well-meaning residents have been urged to disregard the publication entirely, as it does not reflect the position, policy or intention of the government in any way.
The Benue State Government also put mischief-makers, rumour peddlers and purveyors of disinformation on notice that the deliberate fabrication and circulation of false information intended to incite public disaffection, disturb the peace or damage the reputation of government institutions is a criminal offence under extant Nigerian law, including the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act. Individuals found culpable will be identified and made to face the full wrath of the law.
The government stated it will not fold its arms while unscrupulous elements exploit social media to sow discord and mislead the public. It remains committed to transparency and will continue to engage the public through official channels.
