Military Issues Renewed Safety Warnings After Fatal Boat Capsize on River Benue

The Maritime Component of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) has issued a fresh safety alert to boat operators, passengers, and riverside communities along the River Benue following a tragic boat mishap that claimed nine lives amid rising water levels.

According to a statement released in Makurdi by the Acting Media Information Officer, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, the warning was conveyed by the Maritime Component Commander of OPWS, Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Zakari. The incident occurred when a boat capsized between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., resulting in the deaths of nine people.

Zakari emphasized that strict compliance with established maritime safety regulations could have either prevented the accident or significantly reduced the number of casualties. He instructed all passengers and river users to wear life jackets at all times while travelling by boat. Boat operators were urged to provide at least one life buoy on every vessel and to avoid carrying passengers beyond approved limits.

Further directives include equipping boats with essential emergency items such as working torchlights, spare spark plugs, and tarpaulins. The commander reaffirmed that night-time navigation remains prohibited, with boat operations permitted only between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily due to security considerations.

Zakari also directed boat operators to register with their respective unions and ensure they possess valid identification while carrying out their activities. He appealed to mariners to maintain clean waterways by avoiding the disposal of non-biodegradable materials and other waste into the rivers.

Residents of riverine settlements have been encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or criminal activities to security agencies. The commander warned that individuals who disregard these safety directives would face sanctions under applicable regulations, while calling on maritime unions to enforce compliance among their members.

“The maritime component of Operation Whirl Stroke remains committed to safeguarding lives, protecting property and ensuring the security of waterways within its area of responsibility,” Zakari stated.

The renewed safety push comes as a direct response to the recent tragedy, underscoring the need for heightened caution on Nigeria’s inland waterways during periods of rising water levels. Authorities hope these measures will prevent future incidents and protect lives in river-dependent communities.
