A human rights activist has raised serious allegations against a woman identified as Joy and her family members for allegedly convincing and trafficking a young girl from Benue State to Libya.

In a strongly worded statement, the activist claimed that Joy sold the girl for 7 million naira, with the victim expected to pay an additional 10 million naira before regaining her freedom. The girl is reportedly currently stranded in Libya, where she faces harsh conditions and potential harm.

The post, which originated from Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya and was shared by Ukan Kurugh, accused the Benue State Government under Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia of abandoning trafficked children from the state who are crying for help across Africa.

During a conference call yesterday, the activist said Joy committed to settling outstanding payments and making arrangements for the girl’s return home. However, he issued a seven-day ultimatum, warning that failure to make the necessary arrangements would lead him to file a petition against Joy, her mother, and her brother (known as Sunday) for allegedly luring girls from Benue to Libya.

“If any harm befalls this girl in Libya, Joy will be held accountable,” the activist warned.

The matter has sparked concerns about the rising cases of human trafficking involving young girls from Benue State being sent to various countries, including Libya, under the guise of better opportunities.
