Nineteen persons abducted during a communal clash between Ukpute community in Oju Local Government Area and Adiko community in Obi Local Government Area of Benue State have been successfully rescued by security operatives.
The crisis reportedly erupted on Monday when a woman from the Ukpute community was allegedly attacked and severely injured while working on her farm. The incident triggered retaliation by some youths, leading to the abduction of 19 individuals and heightened tension between the two neighbouring communities.
In response to the unrest, security personnel, including soldiers and police officers, were deployed to the troubled areas to restore order. Officials confirmed that a coordinated security operation resulted in the successful rescue of all the abducted victims, who have since been reunited with their families.
The Chairmen of Oju and Obi Local Government Areas, Hon. Ominyi Jackson Adah and Hon. Silas Odeh, visited the Ukpute community in Ainu Ette as part of efforts to calm tensions. During the visit, the leaders appealed to both communities to avoid further reprisals and embrace peaceful coexistence.
The Omi Ny’Igede Youth Wing Development Association has called for urgent humanitarian support for residents affected by the violence. According to the group, many victims are currently in need of food supplies, shelter, and medical assistance following the disruption caused by the conflict.
Communal clashes in Benue State are frequently linked to disputes over land ownership and community boundaries. Authorities continue to advocate for dialogue and early intervention to prevent escalation.
Security personnel have maintained their presence in the affected communities as calm gradually returns. The two council chairmen and other stakeholders have urged residents to remain peaceful and refrain from actions that could worsen the situation.
This latest incident underscores the persistent challenge of communal conflicts in parts of Benue State, where land and boundary disputes often lead to violence, displacement, and loss of lives and property. Local leaders and security agencies are working to ensure lasting peace in the area.
