Nigeria’s Nominee Endorsed as Next Executive Secretary of Lake Chad Basin Commission

The Federal Government has commended the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) for its vital role in fostering regional cooperation and sustainable management of shared water resources among member countries.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Terlumun Utsev, made the remarks during Nigeria’s address at the 71st Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers of the Commission, held in N’Djamena, Chad. Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian delegation—which included the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu—Utsev highlighted the LCBC’s longstanding contributions to environmental restoration, socio-economic development, and the promotion of peace and stability in the Lake Chad region.

The minister expressed deep appreciation to fellow member states for endorsing Nigeria’s nominee, Ibrahim Babani, who has been accepted to serve as the next Executive Secretary of the Commission. Utsev described the endorsement as a reflection of the enduring trust, cooperation, and shared vision among member countries. He assured the Council that Babani would serve with dedication and professionalism in advancing the Commission’s mandate.

Utsev also paid tribute to the outgoing Executive Secretary, Mamman Nuhu, commending his exemplary leadership. He noted that Nuhu’s tenure had strengthened regional cooperation and successfully mobilized international support for the recovery and sustainable development of the Lake Chad Basin.
