Guma Local Government Council in Benue State has commenced the construction of five kilometres of asphalt roads complete with drainage systems in rural communities, marking a historic milestone in grassroots infrastructure development.
The project, initiated under the leadership of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Orwough Maurice, includes a four-kilometre road linking Ngban and Udei communities, with an additional one-kilometre stretch in Daudu settlement. It is being executed by GATAMI Construction Company.
A joint media inspection tour of the ongoing project was conducted on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Speaking during the inspection, the Deputy Chairman and Supervisor for Works, Hon. Tersoo E. Veem, stated that the council embarked on the initiative to improve access to rural communities, facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce, and enhance emergency response capabilities by security agencies.
“This project is aimed at improving the movement of farm produce from our rural communities and ensuring quicker access for security agencies during emergencies. We appreciate Governor Hyacinth Alia for creating an enabling environment for local governments to undertake impactful projects of this magnitude,” he said.
The Director of Civil Engineering in the Benue State Ministry of Works, Engr. Tivfa Wombo, disclosed that the state ministry is providing technical oversight to ensure adherence to approved engineering standards, with the project expected to be completed within five months.
Residents have welcomed the development, describing it as a major intervention that will transform economic and social activities in the area. The project is widely regarded as the first known instance since the creation of Benue State in which a local government council is undertaking full asphalt road construction with comprehensive drainage infrastructure.
