The Chief Medical Director of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, paid an unscheduled visit to Mama Rebecca Suswam, a patient currently receiving free medical treatment at the facility.
Mama Suswam was recently remanded in custody in Gboko over a land dispute involving a former military officer, Mr. Mathias Mungwa. The incident reportedly took a toll on her health, prompting swift intervention from Dr. Hwande upon being informed of her condition. He directed her immediate admission to BSUTH for comprehensive and proper medical care at no cost to the patient.
During the surprise visit, the CMD personally encouraged Mama Suswam to stay strong and steadfast in her faith, reminding her that God remains the ultimate source of healing and restoration. He further offered personal financial support to help her meet other essential needs beyond medical treatment.
Hospital sources confirmed that Mama Suswam is responding positively to treatment and continues to receive close medical supervision under the hospital’s care.
Dr. Hwande’s gesture has drawn widespread praise, with many describing it as a powerful example of compassionate leadership, deep commitment to humanity, and a genuine focus on social justice—particularly for vulnerable individuals. Stakeholders have commended the intervention as a clear reflection of BSUTH’s people-centered approach to healthcare delivery under Dr. Hwande’s leadership.
The CMD’s proactive and humane response has continued to attract commendations, highlighting a leadership style that prioritizes empathy and timely action in addressing the needs of those in distress.
