A fierce fire outbreak struck residential buildings in the High-Level area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on February 3, 2026, completely destroying several homes and displacing multiple families.

The blaze occurred earlier in the day at 13th Avenue, Iorkyaa Ako Street, High-Level Makurdi, affecting a cluster of closely built houses. According to eyewitness accounts and reports from local sources, the fire started suddenly and spread rapidly, reducing affected structures to ashes within a short time.

Neighbours reported that there was no cooking activity or electricity supply in the buildings at the time the inferno began, leaving the exact cause of the fire unknown pending official investigation. The absence of obvious ignition sources has heightened concerns among residents about potential hidden electrical faults or other undetected risks in the densely populated neighbourhood.

The affected families are currently without accommodation and are in urgent need of support. Community members and local authorities have called on the public, government agencies, humanitarian organizations, and well-meaning individuals to provide immediate relief in the form of temporary shelter, food, clothing, bedding, and other essential supplies to alleviate the suffering of those displaced.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the High-Level community, once again drawing attention to the vulnerability of residential areas to fire disasters, particularly in zones with limited access to firefighting equipment and rapid emergency response. Residents have stressed the need for proactive measures, including improved fire safety awareness, regular electrical inspections, and enhanced emergency preparedness in urban settlements.
