Tension is rising in Benue State following reports that Governor Hyacinth Alia has renamed the popular Ishaya Bakut Road in Makurdi after Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The decision has drawn criticism from some residents who argue that the governor has resorted to renaming an existing road instead of delivering new infrastructure projects. Ishaya Bakut served as the Military Governor of Benue State from September 1986 to December 1987 during the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida.

Critics claim the move could stir discontent, particularly among northern interests, and view it as an attempt by Governor Alia to curry favour with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Some have urged the governor to focus on delivering fresh developmental projects rather than symbolic gestures.

The renaming comes shortly after the First Lady’s visit to the state to commission several road projects completed under Governor Alia’s administration. As reactions continue to pour in, the development has sparked debate about priorities in governance and historical recognition in Benue State.
