The Bishop of Gboko Diocese, Bishop William Avenya, has decided to close St. Winifred Ihugh Secondary School following repeated arson attacks on the institution.
According to a breaking news post by Asom D Jerry on Facebook, the closure comes after the school was allegedly set ablaze on three consecutive occasions. The Bishop’s decision is linked to claims that Governor Hyacinth Alia is instigating people to burn down the school in order to take over the land for the proposed Benue State University of Agriculture, Science and Technology in Ihugh.
As a result of the closure, SSS 1–3 students will be transferred to St. Mary Adikpo, while JSS 1–3 students will be moved to Queens of the Rosary Secondary School, Gboko.
The development has sparked concerns among stakeholders regarding the safety of educational institutions and land disputes in the area.
