The Benue State House of Assembly has asked Governor Hyacinth Alia to approve a new salary structure for traditional rulers across the state, recommending that no traditional ruler should earn below the national minimum wage of ₦75,000 per month.

Lawmakers also proposed that official vehicles be provided for traditional rulers, starting with kindred heads, to strengthen leadership at the grassroots.
The recommendation is aimed at improving the welfare of traditional institutions and enhancing their effectiveness in community governance.
The proposal has sparked discussions among residents, with many weighing in on the need to adequately remunerate traditional rulers who play vital roles in dispute resolution, cultural preservation, and grassroots development.
The Assembly’s move is expected to be considered by the state executive in due course.
