Zaki-Biam International Yam Market Appeals for New Transformers to Restore Electricity

Elders, youths, and women of the Zaki-Biam International Yam Market in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State have made a passionate appeal to Governor Hyacinth Alia and relevant authorities for the installation of new transformers.

In an open letter, the market community, described as the largest yam market in West Africa, lamented that they have been operating without stable electricity for years, relying on expensive generators.

They highlighted severe economic losses, insecurity due to darkness, collapsed businesses, and lost revenue to government as major challenges.

The community specifically requested the installation of at least three new 500KVA transformers at strategic points, rehabilitation of power lines, and provision of street lights.

They pledged to provide security for the equipment, free labour for installation, and maintenance through their market association.

The appeal emphasised the market’s contribution to food security and called for urgent intervention to restore light and dignity to the Sankera people.
