A new governance performance report has placed Benue State among Nigeria’s lowest-performing states, triggering fresh criticism of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration three years into office.
According to the Commonwealth Governance Performance Index, Benue State was ranked 34th out of 36 states, raising serious concerns about transparency, accountability, public service delivery, and overall development in the state.
Critics argue that the poor ranking mirrors the harsh realities confronting residents, including persistent insecurity, unemployment, deteriorating infrastructure, and inadequate social services. Many are also demanding clarity on how public funds have been utilised over the past three years.
However, supporters of the administration maintain that the state inherited significant challenges and that meaningful reforms require time to yield visible results.
The report has ignited widespread debate across Benue, with citizens questioning the governor’s performance while others urge patience, highlighting the complexities of governance in the state.
