Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia has commended security operatives for the successful rescue of nine children abducted during a midnight prayer session at Saint John Catholic Church in Ojije, Utonkon community, Ado Local Government Area of Benue State.
The victims—six girls and three boys—were kidnapped from the church premises in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026, an incident that triggered widespread concern and tension across parts of the state.
In a statement reacting to the rescue operation, Governor Alia applauded the swift and coordinated response of conventional security agencies, who worked closely with local vigilante groups to secure the release of the children. He described the operation as a clear demonstration of effective synergy and intelligence-driven action in the fight against insecurity.
The governor reiterated that security remains the bedrock of development in Benue State. He assured residents that his administration will continue to strengthen partnerships with federal security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and grassroots security structures to protect lives and property.
Governor Alia disclosed that intelligence gathering and information sharing have been intensified to track down the perpetrators and prevent future occurrences. He urged citizens to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious movements, and cooperate with security agencies, assuring that the state government will not relent in its determination to eradicate kidnapping and other criminal activities.
The rescue comes days after the governor, on February 13, 2026, convened a high-level security meeting at the Palace of the Och’Idoma in Otukpo. Represented by his deputy, Barr. Sam Ode, he issued a marching order for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted children.
The meeting brought together members of the Idoma Traditional Council and top security chiefs to strategize on the operation. The governor’s directive and the subsequent collaboration between security forces and local stakeholders are credited with the positive outcome.
The rescued children are currently receiving medical care and psychosocial support. Authorities have assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the abduction and ensure justice is served.
The development has been widely welcomed across Benue, with many residents expressing relief and renewed confidence in the state’s security architecture under the Alia administration.
