The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a statement setting the record straight on the death of Asar Michael Sesugh, one of the suspected cyber fraudsters who escaped from its Makurdi Zonal Directorate custody.
According to the Commission, 26 suspected cyber fraudsters were arrested on April 28, 2026, and remanded in custody following a court order. On May 4, 2026, three of the suspects escaped by breaking through the roof of the toilet at the holding facility.
Fresh intelligence on May 21, 2026, led EFCC operatives to a hideout in the Kansho axis of Makurdi, where Sesugh and other suspected cult members were located. Upon sighting the team, the suspects opened fire, prompting operatives to return fire in self-defence. The suspects fled the scene, but Sesugh was later found lying in a pool of blood by the roadside. He was rushed to Police Cottage Hospital at the Police Headquarters in Makurdi, where he was pronounced dead.
The EFCC emphasised that Sesugh was not in custody and was not on bail at the time of his death. The Commission reported the incident to the Benue State Police Headquarters, and the Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.
While extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the EFCC stated it will not condone any attacks on its operatives or breaches of its internal security. The Commission assured the public of its continued commitment to fighting economic and financial crimes in the interest of the nation.
