Mary Onah, a young woman from Oju Local Government Area in Benue State, has finally been reunited with her family after enduring months of detention in Kirikiri Prisons in Lagos, where she gave birth to her child. The heartwarming development was shared on January 7, 2026, by social activist D’naked Elder Sughnen Yaaya, who highlighted the challenges she faced and the grace that led to her release and safe return home.
According to the account, Mary had been employed as a secretary in Lagos but unknowingly worked for a boss involved in fraudulent activities. When the employer fled, her husband feared challenging the case, and the family’s financial constraints prevented them from mounting a legal defense or providing visits during her incarceration. Left without support, she spent several months in prison and delivered her baby under difficult circumstances.
Following her release, arrangements were made for her journey back to Benue State. The trip, which began on Monday, was fraught with difficulties—the vehicle broke down multiple times, forcing her to spend nights in harsh weather conditions with her newborn. Despite these hardships, she arrived safely to reunite with her family on Tuesday.
Yaaya’s post emphasized themes of resilience and faith, noting that “God is always God” throughout Mary’s ordeal. He called on society to continue striving for better support systems for the vulnerable, particularly those caught in unfortunate circumstances while seeking legitimate livelihoods. The story has resonated widely on social media, sparking discussions about access to justice, employer accountability, and the plight of detainees from low-income backgrounds.
