The management of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) has directed the immediate withdrawal of all staff posted to produce inspection points across the state, effective by 11:59 pm on December 31, 2025.
The directive aligns with the newly assented Nigerian Tax Laws passed by the National Assembly and signed by the President, which explicitly prohibit any person, tax authority, association, union, group, or body—known or unknown—from mounting roadblocks anywhere in the country for the purpose of collecting taxes, levies, membership dues, or any other imposed charges.
The laws define a roadblock as any obstruction to the free flow of traffic through the placement of barriers, barricades, or objects that impede vehicular movement, carried out under the guise of tax or levy collection.
BIRS emphasized that the withdrawal is in strict compliance with the new legislation, signaling the end of produce inspection checkpoints that have long been a feature on Benue roads.
The agency urged the general public to take note of the development and comply accordingly, assuring residents of its commitment to lawful and transparent revenue collection practices in line with national reforms.
This move is expected to ease movement for farmers, transporters, and commuters while addressing long-standing complaints about multiple taxation and illegal checkpoints in the state.
