In a swift and decisive operation, police operatives in Benue State successfully rescued 19 passengers who were abducted by suspected armed bandits along the Ohimini-Otukpo Road in Ohimini Local Government Area. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of December 22, 2025, highlights both the persistent security challenges on Nigeria’s highways and the effectiveness of rapid law enforcement response.
According to security sources, the gunmen mounted a roadblock at Mechanic Village on the Ohimini-Otukpo corridor around 2:00 a.m., intercepting two commercial vehicles and forcing all occupants into the surrounding bush. The vehicles included a Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Oju to Ibadan carrying nine passengers, and a Toyota Hummer bus operated by Plateau Riders Company, conveying 11 passengers from Jos, Plateau State, to Bayelsa State. The Plateau Riders bus was reportedly driven by Igoche John.
The attack was promptly reported, triggering an immediate deployment of patrol teams and tactical units. Officers combed the nearby forest, applying sustained pressure that forced the assailants to abandon their captives and flee. All 19 rescued passengers emerged unharmed, with no ransom paid. After preliminary screening, they were cleared to continue their journeys.
However, one passenger, identified as Boniface Ndukwe from Jos, Plateau State, remains unaccounted for and is believed to still be in the custody of the fleeing kidnappers. Police authorities have assured the public that intensive efforts are underway to track the suspects and secure his safe release.
The successful rescue underscores the vigilance of Benue State security forces amid rising concerns over highway abductions in the region. Travelers and residents have long called for enhanced patrols and better illumination along vulnerable routes. As operations continue, this incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced on Nigeria’s roads during the busy festive season, while also offering hope through the safe return of most victims.
