Special Adviser Dismantles Illegal Checkpoints, Warns BSCPG Against Misconduct in Benue

The Special Adviser to the Benue State Governor on Security and Internal Affairs, accompanied by the State Commander and senior officers of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards (BSCPG), has dismantled several illegal checkpoints along the Makurdi-Otukpo road.

The operation, carried out on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, led to the arrest of BSCPG members manning the unauthorized roadblocks. In Aliade, two checkpoints were dismantled and personnel on illegal duty were disarmed and arrested. In Howe, a checkpoint mounted by soldiers near the Chinese office was also ordered removed, with soldiers directed to secure the company’s property instead of obstructing the highway.

The Special Adviser acted after observing the proliferation of roadblocks, in line with the State Commissioner of Police’s directive that roads should not be obstructed except for approved reasons. He warned that such illegal checkpoints impede traffic and create opportunities for criminals when unmanned.

He reiterated that BSCPG members should focus on patrolling their immediate communities, raising alarms, and acting as first responders, and must not establish checkpoints on highways unless operating alongside the Nigeria Police.

The Special Adviser urged the public to report any BSCPG members found operating illegal checkpoints to the State Commander or his office for appropriate action.
