Hundreds of commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as okada operators, took to the streets of Gboko today in a fiery protest against the ongoing killings of their members and the rampant snatching of motorcycles by unknown assailants. The demonstration paralyzed business activities in parts of the town as riders blocked major roads and chanted solidarity songs.

The protest, which drew attention from residents and passersby, was triggered by a series of violent incidents targeting okada riders in recent weeks. Many have been brutally murdered, while others have had their bikes stolen at gunpoint, leaving families devastated and the rider community in fear.

One protester, speaking anonymously, lamented the silence surrounding the plight of Makurdi-based riders, saying, “Makurdi okada, as una no get one voice, the world won’t hear you people like Gboko okadas.” The remark underscored a growing frustration that riders in the state capital have failed to unite in the face of similar threats.

Eyewitnesses reported that the riders carried placards demanding urgent government intervention, improved security patrols, and an end to the culture of impunity. Some called for the deployment of special task forces to track down the criminals responsible for the killings and thefts.

Local authorities have yet to respond officially, but sources within the Gboko Divisional Police Command confirmed receiving reports of the protest and assured that investigations into the attacks are ongoing. Community leaders have also appealed for calm while urging the state government to address the security vacuum affecting commercial transporters.

The protest highlights a broader crisis of insecurity affecting low-income earners who depend on okada riding for survival. As tensions rise, riders have vowed to continue demonstrating until concrete actions are taken to protect their lives and livelihoods. For now, Gboko remains on edge, with the voices of the okada riders echoing a desperate call for justice and safety.
